Hip-Hop is Dead (Again)

CHZA of the Filter tries to put a new spin on the tired "hip-hop is dead" rant. And fails. He complains:

"Nowadays, the motives of the Ja Rules and the Nellys are unmistakably clear—let the dolla holla back. They couldn’t care less about artistry, and neither does their audience. Hence the hundreds of radio-friendly singles without any redeemable albums to show for it."

Yessir, very insightful. Not only is Nelly and Ja-Rule trying to pimp the culture, but the fans are stupid for listening. I wonder if CHZA gets paid for writing. Does that disqualify him as a journalistic artist?

These type of articles are overdone despite the best attempts to correct their claims that hip-hop is done for good or had its best days back in the the early nineties. These music critics never add anything enlightening or new to the subject by writing their compliant. It seems that the only reason they do it is to establish themselves as a hip-hop authority- "My taste is so above what is offered in rap right now. Only the classics will do." Hip-hop snobs with jobs. Professional fans. Their writing is boring and tired; uncreative and full of cliche.

Hip-hop is dead? Man, hip-hop criticism is dead! (especially online.)

Holleration

I done heard about HipHop's death since the Sugar Hill Gang. Then RunDMC. Then Will Smith. Then...

Reminds me a lot of the "Rock is dead" articles, which are seen almost as often as the "NEW SAVIOR OF ROCK AND ROLL" labels applied to every band, ever.

I think music criticism as a whole is pretty dead.

This pisses me off for a reason other than the obvious . . . mainly, I'd like to be the one writing blathering columns for .50 a word. The fact that I'd say some completely different, much more insightful shit is completely secondary - I just want those dollas to holla back!

haha I made an almost identically title post on my blog Feb 29th about a completely different article...check it here:

Criticism is dead. Today, everyone is a critic - rendering the word meaningless.

Yo on the real, all of you who dissed the journalist are wrong in my eyes. Mainly because they don't put the music out there. They listen to it just like we do and they are entitled to their opinion just as you are. I will never defend these artists because they are short-changing fans whether we choose to accept it or not. Hip-Hop deserves every bit of hard criticism it gets because I know it's potential and we as a culture are under-achieving severely. My view is: when Hip-Hop sucks, society sucks as well. The two are contingent upon each other. We view each other as enemies and dismiss any constructive criticism as hating. There's no excuse for the nonsense in hip-hop right now, absolutely none. The measure of a man isn't to see how many guns, cars, jewelry, and women you can get. How many lives can you affect? Is Hip-Hop dead? Not just just yet, but it is definitely on a respirator. But when I enter the game I will recussitate it.

Mark my words.

Hip Hop has lost most of the momentum it had when Dre and Snoop first landed in the early '90s. It's only the nature of the business. For 15 years, people have seen a lot of what hip-hop has to offer. It's only natural that now they would want something different.

i think real problem is lack of musicianship in hip hop nobody plays an instrument
and the sad fact that hip hop listeners now a days only listen to whats hot and thats gotta go
ya sure all those rappers in the mainstream are talented
talented comedians yes , talented salesmen yes , but talented muscians or artists NO!
most rappers are like politicians they lie just as much as they do
for example donald rumsfeld use to say that there are weapons of mass distruction in iraq , now he denies ever saying that to get the approval rating back up ,just like how rappers diss eachother so that ppl can pay attention to them cuz there career has taken a nose dive as of late they gotta do something or else its back to work.
to me lyrics are poetry they mean something they influence they inspire ,they make your day ,they make you want to become a writter or a musician ,
but when i hear these battles i hear garbage , some guys talking smack in such a cowerly way might as well tell him to his face ,but he wont cuz hes too cool to do that
at that point when the battles take place its no longer music its a sports its like the UFC of talking smack.

I feel that people are only saying hiphop is dead b/c there favorite artist are not selling. How can hiphop be dead when there are artist like Juelz and Wayne,Jeezy, Lupe Fiasco, Ludacris, TI,etc. I feel that most of you people who are saying hiphop is dead are New York East Coast rap bias and can't except the fact that the south has the game locked. Why is everybody mad at the south for, switch your style up,and go to south paw(fat joe)

Hip Hop is not dead.Just throw away all those glamour mags for posers: XXL,The Source etc,Turn off your televisions:Then Pick up some books (Cant Stop ,Wont Stop" is a good place to start)Read listen and study what the FOUNDATIONS of Hip Hop culture were living like and how they thought, and how the media corparations that you are helping keep rich by buying the pitiful garbage they put out really treated and thought of Poor Black/Hispanic/dark skinned people,Both in America and around the world:Then maybe some of you will grow up and start acting your age.All Hip Hop Disciplines Graff/Music/B-Boying/ are about showing the world that WE ARE HERE and we can create, and we have dreams ,and we deserve to be respected.Thet are also about keeping each others spirits alive whilst living under spirit crushing conditions.NONE OF THESE MTV "RAP STARS" ARE DOING THAT...You can tell by the tired boring, lame ass CDs they put out.Yes you can get silly teenagers to buy your crap,But any Hip Hop fan over 30 can see what an effect this is having on kids (Both black and white) in society..and YOU bloody well know it too,and you dont give a sh*t.You are shameful and I know a lot of old skoolers are embarressed by you.www.myspace.com/kramizm

Hip Hop has ended up the same as disco..dont beleive me? - READ UP. You can get some people to do anything if you give them enough money.I am so greatful that i experienced Hip Hop all through the 1980s - before the great sell out ( around 1992/93).I for one am GLAD the sales are down, because, like all the older forms of urban music, the only people who do it when the money is gone are the people who REALLY Believe in it.. ( too much truth for you , you sell outs????)

Posted by: Kramizm at Apr 22, 2008 12:49:23 PM

AND BEFORE YOU ASSUME TINGS i aint a "backpacker" -Electrofunk is as much a part of Hip Hop as Boom Bap, and if you think otherwise then whats Planet Rock made by Afrika Bambaata? , hes knows quite a lot about "Real Hip Hop" ... i thought that would shut u up....

SUCKERS SELLOUT SO I STAND ASIDE, ANOTHER BROTHERS GREED OVERTAKES HIS PRIDE.

Hijack u.k "hold no hostage" 1991
